Crafted by nature, finished by hand – The Dockyard Legacy

Crafted by nature, finished by hand has always been our ethos. We design our wine racks around the character of the timber, working with the wood not against it. Once the timbers have been cleaned up we begin the fun part….. deciding on the design of the piece.

Dockyard Legacy – the design process

For the Dockyard Legacy deciding on the design wasn’t too difficult as one side was just full of character. The first process is to mark out thr holes for the wine bottes. Here you can see we position the holes to work in harmony with the natural features of the timber. This is what in the end makes such beautiful pieces.

Once the holes have been drilled we then decide whether or not to add refurbished metalwork. Some wine racks we leave without but the Dockyard Legacy features some amazing refurbished metalwork. The size of this wine rack allowed us to be really bold when deciding on the metal design as the scale of this piece meant it would not be over shaddowed by the industrial iron.

At this stage you can really see the piece coming together & once it has had it’s final coat of wax the transformation is complete! It never ceases to amaze us how incredable these reclaimed timbers turn out & live on in testament to their history.

The Dockyard Legacy now lives on as an impressive 12 bottle wine rack. The timber used for this piece was previously a part of Chatham Dockyard in Kent. This historic dockyard was closed in 1984 & has been subject to renovation since then. Once used to form a part of the original dockyard buildings the Dockyard Legacy now stands in testament to it’s previous life.
